What to look for in a legal translator

Choosing a legal translator isn’t like sourcing a standard supplier.

The cost of a mistake in a legal document isn’t measured in revision time but in what happens when the document is challenged, filed or signed by parties who understood it differently. Here’s what to look for before you commit.

1) Specialization over generalism
A translator who works across every field is a generalist. In legal translation, generalism has limits.

The terminology of contract law, corporate law, IP law and regulatory compliance are each distinct, and within each, different jurisdictions add another layer. Look for a translator who can tell you which areas of law they work in most, and who has worked with documents similar to yours.

2) Familiarity with the Italian legal system
If your documents will have legal effects in Italy, your translator needs to know how the Italian legal system works, not just how Italian words are spelled.

Concepts that have direct equivalents in one legal system sometimes have no equivalent in another.

A translator who understands both systems can navigate these gaps. One who doesn’t will produce a fluent text that misses the point.

3) Process and communication
A professional translator asks questions. Not as a sign of uncertainty but as a sign of rigor. If a term is ambiguous, if a clause could be read two ways, if the destination jurisdiction isn’t clear: these are things worth flagging before the translation is finished, not after.

A translator who never asks questions either isn’t reading closely or is making assumptions. Neither is what you want in a legal document.

4) References and track record
Can they point to relevant experience? Do they have existing clients in your sector? Have they worked with law firms or companies doing business in Italy before? These aren’t difficult questions and the right translator will answer them directly.
