But <strong>what makes a good translation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-requirements-for-a-good-translation\">The requirements for a good translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Accuracy<\/strong>, meaning <em>\u201cfreedom from mistake or error\u201d<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/accuracy\">Merriam-Webster<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/accuracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/accuracy\">dictionary<\/a>). A good translation should be<strong> error-free<\/strong>, which is not to be understood as the need to stick to the original text (word-for-word translation), but rather as <strong>attention to the correctness of the text<\/strong> (in terms of grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, terminology), but also to its <strong>completeness<\/strong> (omissions, additions). Moreover, accuracy also means <em>\u201cconformity to truth&#8221;<\/em>, which means that a good translation must give <strong>authentic and verifiable information.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Usability<\/strong>: a good translation should be as <strong>readable and natural as an original text<\/strong>. In other words, the reader should not be able to discern that it is a translation.<\/li><li><strong>Acceptability<\/strong>: a good translation <strong>should adhere to the cultural and linguistic norms and conventions of the target context<\/strong>. The focus is therefore on the use of appropriate language and style, putting the target audience first, who should perceive the text as belonging to their original context.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, accurate, usable, and acceptable are three key features of a good translation.
